Ebden, Purcell Capture Doubles Title

10 Apr 2022

Australian Open doubles finalists Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell captured the 2022 doubles title of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club on Saturday.

The Australian duo defeated Serbian twins Ivan and Matej Sabanov 6-3, 6-3. Trailing early in the first set, Ebden and Purcell attacked the adversity with ease and managed to take both sets in the match. Ebden and Purcell did not drop a set en route to the title.

Ebden and Purcell are the first Australian duo to win US Clay since Pat Cash and Patrick Rafter in 1996. The title at River Oaks is Ebden's fifth career ATP Tour doubles title and Purcell's first career Tour-level title.

“We had so much fun during the week,” Ebden said. “We were clinical during the week. We’re happy and excited. We came to Houston early and had a lot of training days to get used to the courts and the conditions and it paid off. We enjoyed our time here.”

Ebden and Purcell are just the fourth Australian duo in the Open Era to win the US Clay doubles title. The Sabanov brothers are the second pair of siblings to reach the River Oaks doubles final in the last two tournaments.

“This is our fourth event together and we just combine really well out there,” Purcell said. “There’s no stress and no worries out there. It’s easy to play with (Matthew).”

The singles final between Americans Reilly Opelka and John Isner takes place at 2 p.m. at River Oaks. The final will be available to watch on ESPN3 and can be viewed here
